Achievements


  • Building the National Archives has its own Building Comprising, 1,50,000 sq. ft. covered area with a cost of about Rs. 95.650 million including foreign exchange component of Rs. 10 million with the facilities like


  • Equipment:It braes modern Central air-conditioning, Telephone exchange, Fax, separate lifts for passengers, and cafeteria

  • Enactment of “Archival Material (Preservation and Export Control) Act, 1975

  • Enactment of National Archives Act-1993. Consequently Permanent records of Ministries, Divisions and Federal Government Departments lying with them since 1947 are being transferred to the National Archives
  • Equipmnet of microfilming, conservation, Photostatting machines and digitization equipment.

  • Acquisitions: 45 private collections, 1563 titles of newspapers etc from various sources

  • Accruals of non current permanent files from various Ministries/Divisions.Evaluation and disposal of non current files since 1988.

  • Microfilming of vital public records, private collections, newspapers, manuscripts (20 millions pages)

  • Recording and preservation of interviews of various eminent personalities both in audio and video format.(249 Cassettes)

  • Publication of 26 Accession lists, descriptive catalogues of various holdings.

  • Publication of “Guide to the Sources of Pakistan’s History” under the auspices of the International Council on Archives. The Guide covers the survey of Archival holdings presented by National and Provincial Archives, District Archives, Museums, Libraries and Private Collections held by various individuals

  • Holding of three International Conferences in Pakistan such as:
  • International Symposium on Archives 1982 participated by 13 countries and experts of International organizations in addition to local delegates


  • SWARBICA’s regional Seminar on Training needs and Policies held in 1989 participated by seven countries of the region.


  • SAARC  Seminar on Archives held in 1991 and participated by all SAARC countries. The topic was regional cooperation in the field of archives.


  • Holding of 20 short term trainings in Record Management Archives administration, Conservation and Restoration, microfilming.


  • Participation in more than 50 International Conference, Seminars, Symposia and Workshops in Europe, Asia, Far East, Africa and North America in the field of Archives Administration and Records Management besides International Congresses and Round Tables on Archives under the auspices of the International Council on Archives. (The Director General, Director, Deputy Directors and other officers attended these conferences).


  • Holding of International Traveling Exhibition of rare photographs and documents in 1990 in USA, UK, Canada, France, Holland, Turkey and UAE. The topic of the exhibition was “Pakistan: Genesis and Birth” which was held in connection with Golden Jubilee of Pakistan Resolution, 1940.


  • Holding of similar exhibitions in almost every big city in Pakistan on,National Days like Independence Day (14 August),Pakistan Day (23rd March), Quaid-i-Azam’s birth and death anniversaries, etc.


  • Exchange Agreement with the India Office Library and Records, London for free exchange of microfilms of archival material, prints and drawings, maps etc.


  • Preservation, Microfilming and Restoration of Quaid-e-Azam papers. Publishing and Printing of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah Papers. The National Archives had launched a project for printing and publishing Jinnah’s Papers in series of volumes. The project is now working under the ministry of culture as a separate entity but within the premises of the National Archives using the facility of loging and papers.


  • Preservation, Microfilming and Restoration of All-India Muslim League Papers known as the Archives of Freedom Movement. The collection comprising 624 has been transferred to the National Archives from the University of Karachi in 1994.


  • The Shamas-ul-Hassan collection, a segment of Jinnah's papers, has been microfilmed and photocopied.


  • Publication of Bi-annual Journal on Archives titled “The Pakistan Archives” since 1984.


  • Reference and Research Facilities provided to 10,000 Foreign and National Research Scholars e.g. Prof. Dr. lawrence ziring, Stanly Wolpert of USA, Mr. Aziz Beg, Mr. Sharifudin Pirzazda, Dr. Riaz Ahmad, Ayerhe Jalab are the known figures having used these papers
